Sobre a pertinência de ensinar Monteiro Lobato para crianças

Blogueira preguiçosa é assim: em vez de escrever seu próprio post, linka para os comentários que deixou em post alheio. O post em questão trata do verbo judiar, mas a discussão nos comentários ramificou-se em outras direções e eu gostaria de chamar a atenção para uma delas. Entrei numa discussão com o Alex sobre a pertinência de ensinar Monteiro Lobato na escola para crianças. Infelizmente os comentários do blog dele não são numerados, mas é só fazer um ctrl+f para Emília ou Camila que vocês chegam ao início da minha conversa com ele. Vão lá e me digam o que vocês acham, por favor – eu gostaria muito de ouvir a opinião de mais gente a respeito.

cami, nem sempre eu concordo totalmente com o alex, mas nessa discussão – que foi interessantíssima – ele me convenceu sem nenhum espaço pra dúvidas. pareceu a voz da razão pra mim.

É o mesmíssimo caso de “Little Black Sambo” em inglês. Não se deve ensinar as estórias de Lobato nas escolas só pelo valor folclórico senão pela abordagem do tema do racismo. Claro que não podemos, e não devemos, esquecer do racismo do passado, então deixemos que tal literatura adquira mais uma dimensão — a de criar diálogo sobre o racismo.

Vejo o seguinte problema nessa linha de pensamento: a educação está deixando todos os temas mais severos de discutir pra quando a pessoa está mais velha, e ao invés de deste cedo trabalharmos pelo desenvolvimento das capacidades de(nesse caso) avaliar o mundo em que vivemos e de onde viemos, estamos fazendo com que as pessoas cheguem na academia ainda com dificuldade de relacionar assuntos, quanto mais de discutir e quem sabe pensar diferente. Eu trabalho com história e os alunos não só não veem racismo e preconceito no hoje, como não entendem suas estruturas ao longo do desenvolvimendo da sociedade. Vejo ML como um ponto de discussão não só de literatura, mas de história, onde podemos ver como outrora a sociedade tratava os negros, e tentar fazer com que a partir do que eramos(sociedade)nos tornemos algo melhor. Acredito que é possivel, e até necessário o uso de livros que tenham seus maleficios, mas que sirvam para fazer com que as crianças e adolescentes cresçam já vendo um mundo com contrastes.

anjo, existem mil outros livros que podem servir para discutir o tema, e varios outros topicos em Historia que podem servir pra discutir o tema, sem precisar expor as criancas a livros de conteudo nojentamente racista…

o racismo é uma visao de mundo que se forma atraves da naturalizacao do comportamento racista… se vc cresce e todos os seus herois sao brancos, se os brancos sempre sao os mais ricos e os mais fortes e os mais inteligentes, e os poucos negros que aparecem sao (como a tia anastacia) animalizados, ridiculos, etc, isso acaba influenciando sua visao de mundo…

mais uma vez, ninguem está falando para proteger as criancas dos males do mundo, mas isso nao é igual a expo-las a literatura racista… o racismo, numa sala de aula brasileira, TEM que estar SEMPRE em pauta, mas temos que dar o exemplo, temos que mostrar que eh possivel escrever boa literatura sem ser racista, e nao dizer, olha, vamos ler esse livro, que eh legalzinho, mas tentem nao reparar a ideologia nojenta na qual ele se baseia….

mais uma vez, é possivel discutir o racismo sem usar literatura racista, assim como é possivel falar de anti-semitismo sem dar o Mein Kampf pras criancas lerem…

Oi Cami, bom dia! Desde ontem venho pensando sobre essa questão (usar ou não os textos de ML com crianças)e, como te disse pelo fone, achei-a bem complexa. Envolve tantas coisas – desde a maturidade/capacidade/possibilidae das crianças para abstração, até as funções do ensino da literatura, passando pela relação professor-aluno, just to name a few… – que fica difícil elaborar uma opinião que ao menos contemple todas elas.

Não sem esforço, portanto, cheguei a uma conclusão. Temporária, porque não raramente mudo de idéia se convencida do contrário…

Acho que não vale a pena um professor de ensino fundamental usar os textos de ML em seu curso. Digo “não vale a pena” porque ele estará sujeito a enfrentar situações delicadas, como aquela que o Alex ilustrou num comentário: o professor vai dar um esporro na turminha que zomba do colega negro “beiçudo”, e eis que dois espertinhos sacam a Emilia de debaixo de suas mesas dizendo “mas, ué?, professor, a Emilia também fala assim com a ciclana…”. E o pior é que, como te disse ontem, acho que os alunos – se considerarmos crianças já de 10, 11 anos – já entendem bem a diferença entre a fala deles e a da Emilia… é que o mais importante é tentar “pegar o professor no pulo”, mostrar uma incoerência, testar os limites. Para os alunos, importa menos o racismo e a negritude do colega do que ficar a todo momento tentando “enrolar” o professor no seu próprio discurso. E, só para deixar claro, as crianças de 9, 10, 11 anos não fazem isso por serem pequenos demônios encarnados (apesar de que às vezes é essa a impressão que temos!). Fazem simplesmente porque “precisam” fazer: é um momento crucial em que começam a sentir e ter de fato muito mais autonomia em relação aos “adultos”, mas ainda estão bastante preocupados com a presença deles, adultos, e assim precisam testar para saber “onde” estarão pais, professores, irmãos mais velhos etc. Eles querem e de fato podem obter maior independência, porém, por outro lado, também é importante que tenham e sintam o adulto “bordeando” essa maior liberdade.

Daí vc poderia me dizer: “bom, Bel, mas se eles até já sacam a diferença entre eles e Emilia, putz, melhor ainda: usa-se ML pela riqueza de suas histórias e também para colocar em pauta, junto às crianças, questões acerca do racismo, da escravidão, do preconceito etc…”.

Sim, seria uma opção… mas o problema de tal opção é que, justamente, e nessa hora me coloco na pele do prof. e não do aluno, o prof. está desnecessariamente correndo o risco de expor o aluno negro a estas gozações – e, portanto, ao sofrimento desse aluno. Ou, se não houver aluno negro na sala (que, em escolas particulares, por exemplo, de fato estão em minoria), o prof. poderá expor, sei lá, um outro funcionário da escola, um cara da padaria da esquina, o pipoqueiro, sei lá… qualquer pessoa negra que faça parte do cotidiano das crianças porque, para elas, o mais importante não é o racismo nem a pessoa negra, mas sim o embate com o professor, como disse antes.

Certamente nenhum professor escapará disso. Com ou sem ML, ele terá de enfrentar o enfrentamento das crianças em outras muitas e cotidianas situações. Lidará com outros imprevistos e será “pego no pulo” em outros momentos que poderia sequer ter imaginado. Então não vejo por que facilitar que um aluno ou qualquer pessoa seja exposto a brincadeiras bobas, se os importantes temas que os textos de ML levantariam podem ser abordados por outros meios.

E é duro, Cami… as crianças são MUITO espertas. Pode haver trocentos diálogos sem qualquer referência racista; mas elas vão pegar justo aquele um da “negra beiçuda” para desafiar o professor. Por isso que não vale a pena correr o risco.

Já para adolescentes – ensino médio – não acho que tenha grandes problemas. Já pega mal “fingir” que não entende, fazer certo cinismo só para peitar o professor…Só que daí as histórias já não tem mais graça, né?

Bom, se servir de consolo, eu li pouquíssimas coisas do ML, porque não gostava muito mesmo e porque nunca foi leitura obrigatória, e fui uma criança muito feliz!! Eu lia várias outras coisas, jogava futebol, queimada e ping-pong, montava “cabaninhas” fantásticas, brincava de Gato-Mia…

pois eh, bel… os livros podem ser bons, mas quando a gente começa a pensar nas situacoes reais que podem surgir, aí desiste… eu concordo que no ensino medio (depois da oitava serie) os alunos jah tem mais maturidade, mas aí acho é que nao teria mais sentido dar o Sitio, pois eles achariam infantial. alem disso, no ensino medio, a literatura passa a se centrar nos livros pro vestibular… a maior liberdade de escolha do professor eh no ensino fundamental

Prezada Camila,

sou vizinho aqui do lado e venho reclamar do barulho que anda fazendo com essas questões, com essas diaphonias, com essas repetições e tudo o mais. Aqui do lado mora um sujeito meio velho e rabugento, e, que apesar de ler as coisas daqui com certo interesse, fica reclamando entre os dentes de quase tudo o que lê. Isso é um bom sinal, porque a rabugentice do povo singular de cá é tamanha que até o ranger dos dentes é sinal de afeto, até o descompasso da retina (haja sentido para tanto olho) é uma coisa boa. Venho reclamar dessa coisa do Lobato. Acho que ele nem é tão grande cuja leitura deva ser evitada em função da formação de grandes anti-semitas vocabulares, ou racistas adjetivantes de beiços, nem tão pequeno, cuja metafísica do personagem não seja importante para o animismo afro-português-indígena-sei-lá-mais-o-que brasileiro. Lobato não é lá flor que se cheire, mas cheirá-lo, longe daquele mundo, ainda traz certo refinamento do gosto. Não conheço muitas flores cheiráveis.

Oi pessoas.

Que delícia de discussão.
Acho que quando nós falamos de ensino fundamental e restringimos as faixas etárias a 10 ou 11 anos, estamos pensando apenas em alunos recém ingressos no ensino fundamental. Alunos de 14 e 15 anos também estão no ensino fundamental. No último. Quando há um salto na maturidade das áreas de conhecimento. Geralmente, introduzimos geometria, química e física de uma maneira mais consistente na oitava série. Se não me engano, o período de entre guerras e a descolonização da África também são conteúdo de oitava série. Quero dizer, há sim um momento em que o aluno, ainda fora do sistema de ensino pro vestibular, tem maturidade o bastante pra fazer uma leitura mais crítica. E diferente do que se pensa, não rejeitam necessariamente livros mais “infantis” (não mais do que rejeitam a leitura de modo geral).
E eu pensei em outra coisa. Que a obra do ML é gigante. Que há textos mais e menos problemáticos. A escolha do professor pode neutralizar um pouco o racismo do texto. Por exemplo, eu não daria grande parte da obra de Machado pra alunos de ensino fundamental – mesmo na oitava série. Mas eu daria alguns contos. Como “noite de almirante”, pra abordar, entre outras coisas, questões de gênero. Porque embora o narrador seja tendencioso, e a situação leve, num primeiro momento, a uma revolta contra o gênero feminino, ele dá espaço pra opinião contrária. É ambíguo o bastante pra ser uma leitura rica. Creio que em ML tbm haja textos que dão essa margem de questionamento, e o recorte pode então permitir tanto a experiência da leitura do Ml quanto a problematização do racismo. Não tenho nenhum exemplo em mente, agora. Alías eu não fui, quando criança, leitora do Lobato. Li outras coisas, fui conhece-lo melhor no colegial. Lamentei não te-lo conhecido antes.

E mais uma coisa, que a Bel e o Alex disseram. Sobre introjetar o precondeito, que aflora contra colegas ou outras pessoas. É verdade, o risco disso acontecer é enorme. Não sei se vou conseguir me fazer entender. Eu acho que o preconeito racial está muito, muito disseminado no país (e o blog do Alex me mostra isso cada vez mais e mais). E acho que a escola tem tido um papel muito pequeno no processo de formação dos alunos. Porque se distanciou mesmo, do tipo de linguagem e conteúdo e práticas de que se serve. Então um aluno que reproduza o preconeito racial contra um colega ou outra pessoa, dificilmente terá conhecido o preconeito com ML. Porque há falta de participação dos negros em outros canais de comunicação mais acessíveis, como a televisão. E há expressões pejorativas nas bocas das pessoas mais próximas, etc. Quero dizer, a leitura do ML não seria um introdutor do racismo aos alunos. E pode não se tornar um “reforçador” do racismo. Pela escolha do professor e pela abordagem em sala de aula. Que, diferindo da “normalidade” com que o preconceito é rebebido, pode criar uma perspectiva crítica. Expor esses traços pode estimular um debate sobre a representação do negro de modo que o aluno repare em outros lugares em que esses preconceitos se apresentam. Pode ser muito frutífero. Mas, claro, depende de muita habilidade do professor. E de um projeto de leitura mais amplo do que a obra do ML. Outas obras, pra estabelecer comparações, pra criar esse senso de empatia e alteridade, etc etc.

Olá, pessoal

A Emília é uma figurinha “encardida” mesmo e, acredito piamente que as crianças são inteligentes o suficiente para perceber isso. E, com ela, inclusive, também percebem que podem ser questionadoras e criativas.

Daí o meu espanto de cair o queixo: não apresentar o Monteiro Lobato para as crianças? Por quê? Sinceramente… Contextualização histórica existe para quê? Qual era a época do autor?

Privar as crianças de conhecer / conviver com personagens criativas, instigantes, contestadoras como a Emília; privá-las das aventuras do Pedrinho e da Narizinho; do Visconde; dos quitutes da Tia Nastácia e dos comentários da Dona Benta? Perder a oportunidade de seguir o Tio Barnabé e o Saci? Privá-las do contato com o folclore brasileiro, com as brincadeiras, com o humor, com as releituras dos contos de fadas, com a forma como são apresentadas as relações entre as pessoas? (A Chave do Tamanho foi um dos livros que, nos meus 10/11 anos, muito me impressionou e me fez querer ler mais e mais!). Não seria melhor aprender a ler e discutir a obra de Lobato? Só para lembrar: literatura também é para ser debatida, inclusive com as crianças.

Mais especificamente sobre o tema que gerou a polêmica, vale navegar por aqui:

E também não resisto em trazer para o debate o Dicionário Crítico da Literatura Infantil e Juvenil Brasileira de Nelly Novaes Coelho que, lá pela página 645, comentando a obra infantil de Lobato, coloca:

“Indiscutivelmente, ela [Emília] é a personagem-chave do universo lobatiano, pois é a única que vive em tensão dialética com os demais e também a única que sofre transformações em sua personalidade. Todas as demais personagens que formam a constelação familiar do Sítio do Picapau Amarelo são arquétipos: Narizinho e Pedrinho são crianças sadias, alegres e sem problemas, que servem para dar suporte à trama dos acontecimentos e, em geral, para servirem de contraponto à boneca. Dona Benta, a avó ideal. Tia Nastácia, a serviçal eficiente, afetuosa e humilde, mas querida e respeitada, símbolo idealizado da raça preta que está em nossa gênese de povo e foi a melhor fonte das histórias que alimentaram a imaginação e a fantasia de gerações e gerações de brasileiros. Aos que chamam Lobato de racista, por criar essa personagem negra e ignorante, não percebem que dentro do seu universo literário não há preconceito nenhum, pois Tia Nastácia é querida e respeitada por todos; e que, ao tirá-la da vida real onde viveram (ou vivem?) milhares de Tias Nastácias, Lobato foi apenas realista: registrou o que nossa realidade vivia (ou vive?).”

Pois bem, se hoje o mundo mudou (será?) ou se o queremos mudado, saibamos então trabalhar com o excelente material literário que temos: se, em alguns pontos, ele é questionável – ótimo! Saibamos, como a Emília, mostrar a língua, espernear e aprender a discutir isso, e não simplesmente deixar de usá-lo (por que esse medo de que a criança saía por aí mostrando a língua?)

Os textos precisam e devem ser enfrentados, conhecidos, lidos, debatidos, deglutidos – não devem ser substituídos ou escondidos! Valha-me a Santa Muiraquitã (rs) – daqui a pouco vão propor que deixemos de ler até o Macunaíma!

nossa, a aline matou a pau. eu como quase todo o mundo li o sítio quando criança e nem sabia que tinha mais lobato pra além da lit. infantil.

Cesar, não sei se entendi direito seu comentário… Só queria deixar registrado que sou super a favor de ler, cheirar e inclusive apalpar as criações do Lobato. Tenho um boneco do Freud e uma boneca da Emília no meu quarto – minhas duas grandes influências literárias, sem dúvida.

aline e Patrícia C., obrigada por terem se dado o trabalho de vir até aqui enriquecer a discussão! Ainda mais porque vocês, literatas que são (e diferentemente de mim), realmente sabem do que estão falando. :)

aline, a parte final do seu comentário – do “quero dizer” em diante – podia estar lá no LLL com a minha assinatura. :) É o que venho argumentando o tempo todo. E acho que ninguém discordaria de que a leitura do ML não seria um “introdutor” do racismo para as crianças. Aliás, antes fosse! Todo o problema é que as crianças brasileiras são introduzidas ao racismo já na barriga da mãe… A dificuldade toda, de fato, é impedir que ML se torne um reforçador do discurso racista dominante.

Patrícia, de tudo o que você escreveu, só não concordo muito com o que você não escreveu (isto é, a citação que você fez). :) Quero dizer, Lobato foi bastante realista sim, retratou com precisão a sociedade que tínhamos/temos: uma sociedade em que a inferioridade dos negros já é dada, naturalizada, como um dado de realidade cujo processo de construção histórica nem ocorre ao narrador questionar. (E isso, para mim, não diminui em nada o valor da obra dele – Deus me livre de esperar críticas sociais da literatura.) Enfim, não é o racismo do ML que eu questiono. O que eu questiono, isso sim – como você bem disse, aliás -, é deixar de ensiná-lo por conta disso…

E oh, céus – agora bateu a certeza de que, para voltar a escrever qualquer coisa por aqui, terei de ler antes esse texto que você mencionou – o que só poderá acontecer após os exames finais…

Camila, como é bom esperar os comentários de todos antes de emitir os nossos… Lendo toda essa discussão sobre a propriedade de apresentar a obra de ML às crianças (pra mim de 0 a 13 anos), mantenho minha impressão inicial de incentivá-la e recomendá-la. Mesmo porque eu fui iniciado em ML aos 9/10 anos de idade, não me lembro por quem, mas gostei muito, e valendo-me dessas boas lembranças do Sítio do Picapau Amarelo eu também iniciei voce em ML, acho que bem mais cedo que eu, além de outros autores como Lygia Bojunga Nunes, excelente escritora de literatura infanto-juvenil. Acusar Lobato, o autor do slogan e do livro “O petróleo é nosso!” de racista, nacionalista, xenófobo, ranzinza, editor picareta e falido, etc. é verossímil, mas glorificá-lo como patriota, humanista, agente social, empreendedor, vovô boa praça, também é verossímil. Aliás, esse slogan do “petróleo é nosso” + Getúlio Vargas resultou na hoje poderosa Petrobrás, e toda sua teia de fundos de pensões e patrocínios e incentivos e pré-sais. Mas Lobato não pode ser culpado do que a Petrobrás se tornou! Seu sonho nacionalista era livrar o Brasil da dependencia externa de petróleo, e vejam só o que aconteceu: ainda não somos independentes, temos a gasolina mais cara do mundo e os políticos se engalfinham pelo controle da empresa (a jóia da Coroa), pelo controle do fundo de pensão da Petros, pelo controle da dinheirama que a empresa gira. Os ideais de um visionário servem a muita gente… E vou parar por aqui, porque já nem lembro mais do que eu tava falando no início!

recomendo que não deixe Freud e Emília juntos. As suas apalpadelas podem esquentar o clima entre os dois, e o velho vienense, salvo melhor juízo, é um tanto polimorfo…

Quanto à minha introdução a Monteiro Lobato, eis do que me lembro. Li as Reinações pela primeira vez com uns 6 anos, mas não achei nada demais. Naquela época, para mim, bom mesmo era a Turma da Mônica (e o Tom Jobim, claro, minha obsessão-mor), e só. Depois fui ler de novo aos 10 anos, quando você me deu as obras completas dele de presente – até hoje, um dos top 3 presentes que já ganhei -, e aí sim pirei, me encantei, enfim, dessa fase eu sei que você se lembra…

Cesar, não tema: o coelhinho da Lindt nada mais é que, bem, um coelhinho de pelúcia vendido nas lojas da Lindt durante a Páscoa, aqui nos eua e quiçá em outras paragens. A graça toda está em que ele é bem parecido aos coelhinhos de chocolate vendidos pela mesma empresa. Diz a lenda, aliás – mas isso nunca vi nem comi, não posso garantir – que tais coelhos (os de chocolate) são distribuídos totalmente de graça (isso se você considerar que o tempo gasto na fila não é uma espécie de pagamento) no domingo de Páscoa pelas ruas de NY. Este ano, ganhei um de cada de presente. O de chocolate sobreviveu uns 5 minutos. O de pelúcia teve melhor destino. Abraços!

Até que enfim alguém revela preocupação com as crianças negras, vítimas preferenciais do bullying. Expor obas desse tipo em sala de aula, acriticamente, é o mesmo que a escola avalizar os apelidos, piadas e ofensas de que elas são alvo, reforçando as relações de dominação/subordinação entre brancos e negros em nossa sociedade.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard.
